SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:

Serves as an advanced practice nurse in the area of psychiatric mental health nursing working in both direct and indirect patient care activities.  Direct care functions include providing physical and psychiatric assessments, therapeutic interventions, and case management services.  Indirect care functions include assuming role as a consultant person and educator.  Prescriptive authority is accomplished through collaboration with a psychiatrist.

10. Competent in assessing, planning, and delivering care for patients with co-occurring disorders.

     

Principle Job Functions and Responsibilities

1. Provides individual, group and family therapy as needed.

1. Serves as a consultant to the staff, providing education about psychiatric medication, psychiatric conditions and care giver interventions.
2. Reviews relevant clinical studies, working to translate research findings into routine clinical practice.
3. Provides education as needed to patients, families, and significant others.
4. Provides case management services, coordinates all aspects of the treatment plan with other team members, patient, significant family members and other health services involved in treatment.
5. Assumes teaching role in educational offerings.
6. Provides crisis intervention as needed.
7. Orders Labs and tests.
8. Maintains and reviews patient medical services documents and records as necessary.

Responsibilities delegated by Psychiatrist:

1. Formulating an appropriate diagnosis based on history, physical examination, and clinical findings.

2. Ordering appropriate diagnostic tests.

3. Prescribing pharmacologic agents.

4. Providing information/education and obtaining informed consent for psychotropic medications.

5. Prescribing non-pharmacologic therapies.

6. Making appropriate referrals to other health professionals and community agencies.

7. Determining the effectiveness of the plan of care through documentation of patient care outcomes.

8. Reassessing and modifying the plan as necessary to achieve medical and health goals.

9. Assisting patient family to plan for home care, providing instructions on techniques and methods of home care.

10. Participates in treatment planning, implementation and monitoring.

11. Participating in Quality Improvement activities including systematic review of records and treatment plans.

12. Ordering consultations.

13. Dictating admission orders and discharge summaries.

14. Other duties as required.

     

     

    Summary:

    Assures provision of nursing and medical care in accordance with the South Carolina Mental Health Code, accreditation standards, licensing rules and regulations, legal aspects, hospital policies/procedures, standards of care and practice.  Documents all clinical activities according to policy.
