Perform under the responsibility and supervision of the physician diagnostic and therapeutic tasks to allow the physician to extend his services through the more effective and efficient use of his knowledge in a sphere of decision making required to establish a diagnosis and to plan appropriate therapy. May assist in gathering the data necessary in implementing the therapeutic plan of the physician.
Reports clinically to the Chairman of Medicine and/or assigned supervising physician. Reports administratively to the Chairman of the Department of Medicine.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*1. To assist the physician in the care and evaluation of patients, the physician assistant in Medicine will:
a. Performs and records a full history and physical examination. An interval note may be used when the patient has been discharged within one month prior to admission. An impression and plan will also be recorded.
b. Daily rounds on all patients on service. Identifies all current problems and addresses all problems on a daily basis. Any change in care will be discussed with the attending physician.
c. Writes daily progress notes in SOAP format. These notes should be clearly legible and describe current problems with their perspective plan of care.
d. Dictates discharge summaries in a timely fashion.
e. Completes medical records in a timely fashion.
f. As indicated by the physician assistant's experience, performs therapeutic and diagnostic procedures as directed by the physician.
g. Documents procedures (performed by the P.A.) in the progress notes, noting procedure names, any anesthesia used, complications, any specimens obtained noting amount and color, and how patient tolerated procedure.
h. In concert with the physician, writes orders for appropriate laboratory, diagnostic imaging, various consultations and medicines.
i. Informs the attending physician of all changes in the patient's condition.
j. Serves as a source of information to patients and their families.
k. Intervenes in acute medical problems with appropriate questions, physical, labs and other diagnostic tests, and treatment.
*2. Uses universal precautions in all appropriate settings.
3. Attends conferences (i.e. morning report, noon conference, grand rounds and departmental clinical conferences).

Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
Demonstrated a deep concern for the health and well-being of others. Must be able to deal with patients and their families in such a way as to instill confidence and ease of communication.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Must possess the degree of personal training to quality the physician assistant both professionally and legally to perform all services indicated under "Duties and Responsibilities."
Must have completed a CAAHEP approved program for physician assistants in primary care.
Must be eligible or certified by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medical Education and Licensure and by the NCCPA.
Must be eligible to participate in an/or have completed an approved ACLS program within the last two years. Must be currently certified in basic life support with an updated CPR card.
