A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Autumn Ivy: (https://www.faculty.uci.edu/profile.cfm?faculty_id=6398). Research in the Ivy lab investigates mechanisms of early-life physical exercise on the development and maintenance of cognitive function. We have a specific interest in how early-life exercise may influence interactions between epigenetic mechanisms and post-natal development, to ultimately influence structure and function of specific brain regions. We use mouse models to test the hypothesis that aerobic exercise during early-life developmental periods modulates the epigenetic landscape within cells, fundamentally changing cell and network development and function in a lasting manner. We also introduce physical exercise as a post-hoc intervention in models of genetic or acquired neurological disorders, to identify specific molecular mechanisms therapeutically engaged by exercise. This position would require competency in a number of basic techniques in molecular neurobiology, including RT-qPCR, tissue sectioning and immunostaining, microscopy, basics in cell culture, mouse genetics and behavior, with opportunities for learning epigenetics methods and preparing libraries for deep sequencing. The ideal candidate would be highly motivated, eager and able to contribute ideas and lead projects, offer knowledge and technical expertise in the areas of molecular biology and/or neuroscience, and enjoy working with a collaborative team of dedicated graduate and undergraduate students. If you are interested, please send a CV, cover letter with brief description of career goals and prior research experience, and contact information of three references to email@example.com.
