Work as members of health care and research teams, providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders, to families at risk for a variety of inherited conditions, individuals considering genetic testing, and to individuals participating, or considering participating, in genetics research. Work with other healthcare providers and patients to determine appropriate genetic testing and coordinate care based on genetic information to provide the highest level of patient care, demonstrate research integrity, and maximize patient and research participant satisfaction.
Participate in and coordinate research projects and clinical programs related to the field of medical genetics, genetic testing, genetic counseling, and bioethics.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Deep and broad knowledge of genetics. Ability and commitment to read current literature and keep up to date on genetic discoveries.
Ability to tailor, translate and communicate complex information in a simple, relevant way for a broad range of audiences (researchers, research participants, patients and healthcare professionals).
Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness. Self-motivated with ability to complete patient care, research project objectives and healthcare system requirements with minimal supervision.
Ability to dissect and analyze a complex problem.
Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in workload, staffing and scheduling.
Demonstrates communication that supports a culture of Service Excellence.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Requires graduate degree in genetic counseling from an ACGC accredited college/university and eligibility for Pennsylvania provisional license.
Within 9 months of employment the following are required: ABGC board certification, Pennsylvania licensure, and Geisinger credentialing in genetic counseling.
CITI certification and Geisinger COI required.

Work is typically performed in a research office or an out-patient clinical/office environment.
Research projects often require regional and/or national travel. Weekend and evening hours may be necessary for certain research project activities.
