Job Summary The Director of DUHS Nursing & Patient Care Retention is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining programs and other interventions targeted at retaining the Duke Health nursing & patient care workforce. The director is responsible for metrics, reporting, goal setting, survey administration, etc. In conjunction with Nursing & Patient Care senior leadership, the director will develop strategies for workforce engagement & retention. The director will facilitate collaborative working relationships with partners across the system who each play a role in organizational engagement and retention strategy and program administration (Clinical Education & Professional Development, Talent Acquisition, Human Resources, Analytics, Performance Services, etc.). Duties and Responsibilities Leadership - Develops and implements strategic initiatives and processes for retaining diverse nursing & patient care talent.
- The director leads a team responsible for maintaining and operating engagement & retention programs. Programs in the team's portfolio include RN stay interviews, BSN2020 initiative, RN Tuition Assistance Program, RN certification program, Retention Summits, RN exit interviews, etc.
- Ensures the establishment of engagement and retention goals at least annually.
- Establishes a 'door is always open' persona where employees feel comfortable bringing job related concerns forward. Addresses concerns or ensures problematic issues are communicated to the appropriate leader for a collaborative resolution.
Collaboration & Communication - The director must work to understand the unique perspectives of the target audience and their wants, needs, and priorities, in order to improve interaction and retention with Duke Nursing.
- Establishes positive working relationships and credibility with all managers and leaders to drive engagement across the organization.
- Maintains close partnership with Human Resources, confidentially escalating any employee relations issues that may come to their attention.
- Partners with Human Resources to ensure that workforce surveys are planned and administered in alignment with Nursing & Patient Care Services regulatory and other requirements.
- Partners with Communications, Analytics, HR, and others to ensure that nursing engagement and retention data is thoughtfully and accurately interpreted and communicated to stakeholder groups.
- As part of the new manager orientation process, advises nurse leaders on their roles and reports regarding engagement and retention.
- Drives and supports internal employee engagement and retention through effective and thoughtful communication of the 'why' behind Duke Nursing decisions. Build strong two-way rapport to have a pulse on engagement for Duke Nursing.
Data Analysis - Oversees development of turnover costs and engagement survey dollar value to ensure reports contain dollar data at the organization and leader levels
- In partnership with HR, Analytics & Performance Services, develops, maintains, and distributes turnover reports at the organization and leader levels that contain performance metrics.
- Develops/analyzes metrics and key performance indicators surrounding retention that allows the ability to drill down into specific departments and shifts to recognize areas of opportunity. Collaborates with departmental leadership to address issues that are affecting retention in the identified area(s).
- Creates and delivers communications and reports to leadership highlighting key performance indicators aligned to various engagement initiatives.
- In partnership with Human Resources, analyzes exit interview data for nursing & patient care services to identify trends. On occasion, may implement additional in-person exit interviews for select groups.
Retention Program Management, Infrastructure, and Continuous Improvement - Recommends, develops & implements Nursing & Patient Care retention strategies based on analysis of short-term and long-term retention data.
- Oversees the Nursing & Patient Care Stay Interview process.
- Builds and manages systematic programs to keep employee engagement efforts visible.
- Oversees and supports the Employee Recognition and Incentive Programs and establish meaningful measurements of success and identifying program champions.
- Ensures Duke Nursing recognition and engagement events are on target and inclusive of employees.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities - The Director of Nursing & Patient Care Retention is a strong leader who can comfortably balance overseeing the management of retention programs, while also serving as a skilled as a strategic partner and advisor.
- Effective communicator, with strength communicating with all levels of an organization.
- Has previous experience in leadership, with a strong knowledge of retention strategies
- Able to successfully navigate in a fast-paced, matrixed, complex healthcare environment.
Education - Bachelor's degree requires
Experience -
Work requires seven years of progressive administrative experience, generally in a hospital, health care or similar service industry to become proficient in managing quality of care and financial performance over assigned hospital service line. -
