The Mental Health Clinical Nurse Educator is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs/activities based on assessed learning needs of staff. He/she works collaboratively with unit supervisors in assessing, developing, and maintaining staff's competencies to ensure provision of quality nursing care. He/she demonstrates leadership through developing and coordinating programs to improve quality of care and organizational processes. He/she must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and varied ethnic backgrounds. Willing to work cooperatively as a member of a team in all assignments. Position may entail other duties as assigned. Assesses educational needs to implement program or service-level practice changes. Collaborates with management and other resources to identify educational programs needed to improve clinical skills and performance of professional and non-professional personnel. Validates competencies and assesses the need for interventions. Assesses staff learning needs using various designs and tools for data collection to discover the learning need and knowledge gaps both system-wide and in specific clinical areas. Plans and implements educational activities and offerings to address the unique needs of the patient population, strategic goals, findings from performance improvement activities, new trends in healthcare, and expectations of external regulatory agencies. Coordinates/participates in unit orientation. Mandatory reviews, staff development, continuing education, competency evaluation, career fairs and career development on an ongoing basis. Conducts/coordinates in-service programs prior to the implementation of a new product or equipment. Promotes a spirit of inquiry by stimulating and encouraging staff members to question, probe, and investigate nursing practice problems. Develops educational programs that maintains/develop staff skill and provides and coordinates education to all levels of nursing staff. Integrates research and current literature into educational activities. Provides feedback and coaches employees on their development.
